家宅 之二:傳統的現代化
A HOUSE A HOME VI: MODERNIZING TRADITIONS

港大建築 2020春 二年級設計工作室
HKU SPRING 2020 YEAR 2 DESIGN STUDIO

This studio focuses on developing design approaches to renovating traditional houses in rural China through an understanding of contemporary rural livelihoods and an analysis of the traditional house type from five different climatic regions throughout China. The goal is to ‘modernize’ these traditional homes as we critically re-examine the work of last semester - by rediscovering and applying the many lessons and strategies from our study of Modernist Houses as well as critically discarding and updating some concepts. While the rural can be considered the front lines of the urbanization process, the challenge of designing for the contemporary rural household allows us to both look back and forwards, updating our understanding of the ‘modern’ and the ‘traditional’ for today’s world.
