背包建築 之一:折鐵
BACKPACK ARCHITECTURE I: STEEL FOLD

港大建築 2024 春研究生設計工作室
HKU SPRING 2024 MARCH DESIGN STUDIO

Backpack Architecture is a graduate-level studio that explores architecture as dynamic processes and actions. The first iteration of the series focuses on the local craft tradition of galvanized steel in Hong Kong and investigates design innovation through three types of actions:

1) Material Behaviours - how different fabrication techniques could reveal hidden material properties and trigger new structural behavours of the material;
2) Construction Sequence - the very act of making and materializing ideas;
3) Social Actions - how architecture can participate in wider processes of social change.

The exploration leads to the question of the politics of building processes: means of material sourcing, fabrication, communication, transportation, and assembly sequence. Explorations to pack right, travel light, and build smart are accompanied by discussions and debates on questions between craftsmen and architects, precision and adaptation, machine production and human craft, and global and local cultures.
