Project Kat O
Sha Tau Kok, Hong Kong

Project Kat O is a community-based village conservation initiative of an outlying islans in Hong Kong, supported by the Department of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong. Grounded in extensive field research of the village architecture and natural landscape, the initiative works in close collaboration with the community and local partners to conserve social fabric and revitalize public spaces of the coastal village. These collective constructions invite us to imagine the island’s future, a place where architecture, ecology, and community heritage breathe as one.

Tree Garden
Tree Garden introduces a structural steel roof and canvas canopy to the existing farm shed brick walls and open ground of teh site. The new roof and canopy transform the spaces into an indoor-outdoor venue for village gatherings and activities.

Brick Court at Tree Garden
Through the collective action of students and volunteers, the Brick Court transforms a vacant site within the village into a gathering and leisure space for residents and the public. The permeable red brick paving facilitates rainwater infiltration, enabling the ground to breathe and preserving soil and moisture ecology while effectively suppressing weed growth.

Feast Canopy
Feast Canopy temporarily transforms the fisherman's village plaza into a vibrant venue for the thousand-person Poon Choi feast during the Da Jiu Festival. While providing sun shade, its vivid colors enhance the celebratory atmosphere; by night, the space seamlessly transitions into a flexible hub for village recreation and social life.
Umbrella Cart
Umbrella Cart transforms a common mobile cart within the village into a flexible, easily assembled light structure, serving as a micro-architecture that provides both mobility and shelter for the weekend market.
Half House

Half House uses a light steel structure to trace the contours of the ancestral home preserved in the owner's memory. While serving as a framework for artist Jaffa Lam's artwork during the festival, the structure is designed to be infilled over time post-festival, gradually evolving into a complete building that continues the village's spatial memory into the future.
