Table Room

Table Room explores how furniture can generate distinctive spatial characters within an otherwise ordinary room.
Designed as the new study common for the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at The University of Hong Kong, the space is built around a set of transformable furniture elements that can be reconfigured as tables or display surfaces. These modular pieces support a wide range of learning activities—from seminars and lectures to exhibitions, performances, and community engagement events—allowing the room to adapt fluidly to the evolving needs of students and teachers.
The mobile furniture modules can be easily moved and reconfigured using simple hand tools. The stools are designed to accommodate diverse physical needs—ranging from free-standing seats to versions with backrests and grab handles. Together with the redesigned ceiling lighting and audio-visual system, the furniture system creates an open-ended environment that supports future teaching and learning in languages, cultures, and the arts.
