COMMUNITY MOBILE YATAI
SPRING 2024 HKU DESIGN BUILD WORKSHOP

Twelve HKU students travel to Gifu, Japan and work collectively with local architects, students, and craftsmen to build a mobile “yatai” outside of the Zenkō-ji in Gifu. A yatai (屋台) is a small, mobile food stall in Japan typically selling local delights and street food. They form physical streetscapes and social fabrics of the city, where the boundaries between personal behaviors (eating) and public activities interweave into each other.

Using galvanized steel components fabricated in Hong Kong, the team collectively builds a yatai for the public square outside of Zenkō-ji. The yatai becomes both a information stand and a food stop for communal celbrations. In the process, we gain first-hand experience in construction process, building up tolerances to adapt to the changing or unexpected constraints on-site, and adopting local techniques to economically and creatively facilitate the construction. The yatai is the first of a series of small-scale urban catalytic projects we develop with our partners in Gifu to incrementally cultivate the Zenkō-ji public square into a public realm for the city.
