PUBLIC HOME
SUMMER 2025 HKU
DESIGN BUILD WORKSHOP
Students of the University of Hong Kong and Nagoya Zokei University collaborate to develop material and construction strategies for the repair, repurposing, and regeneration of an unoccupied and unattended house, transforming it into a Public Home for children and other community members. The project is currently run by Hitonone, a local NGO that provides accessible after-school care services for children, and it welcomes its first community programs in Summer 2025.
The hands-on experience brings students into direct contact with the site, material, and people. In this process, we rethink the nature of construction not as intrusive or disruptive actions on earth, but as a form of caretaking of people and the environment. Gifu has a humid subtropical climate that is mild and constantly moist. We bring our everyday knowledge from Hong Kong to Japan - instead of insulating and sealing the building, we reappropriate existing building elements and hybridize materials to create different climatic zones for both the inside and outside. Structural elements would double their function as furniture that allows for different social behaviors within the space, creating a home for the public.
